The California Proposition, officially named the People\u2019s Initiative to Limit Property Taxation, amended the\u00a0Constitution of California<\/a>\u00a0by means of the\u00a0initiative<\/a>\u00a0process. It was approved by California voters on June 6, 1978.<\/p>\n

California Proposition 13 had three significant provisions. The first limited the tax rate for real estate such that the maximum amount of any\u00a0ad valorem tax<\/a>\u00a0on real property would not exceed 1% of the full cash value of such property. In fact, the proposition actually decreased\u00a0property taxes<\/a>\u00a0by assessing property values at their 1975 value.<\/p>\n
